Hammocks Beach State Park
1572 Hammocks Beach Rd.
Swansboro, NC

(910) 326-4881

Hammocks Beach State Park begins at the grassy and shady tree-filled lawns along the water's edge in Swansboro and continues by a 15-minute ferry ride to Bear Island, a barrier island off the southernmost point of Bogue Banks. Visitors are rewarded with one of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches in the area but will want to be prepared to hike the half-mile along a sandy path to the oceanside beaches. The island is accessible only by boat or ferry (see our Getting Here, Getting Around chapter), and reservations can be arranged for camping (see our Camping chapter). There is a small fee for the ferry to Bear Island, which operates from April through October. Memorial Day through Labor Day, lifeguards are on duty and the concession stand is in operation. During these summer months ferry service runs from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM every 30 minutes Wednesday through Sunday, and hourly on Monday and Tuesday.

Loggerhead turtles come ashore at Bear Island at night during the summer to make nests above the tide line. Explorers can observe marine life in tidal creeks and mudflats. Outdoor showers, restrooms and drinking water are available to visitors. Go prepared to shade yourself and take along refreshments. It is a half-mile walk from the ferry landing to the ocean beach. Pack light with day packs and beach supplies, since wagons and carts are not allowed on the ferries. Contact the visitors center for the ferry schedule and rates or visit the North Carolina Parks website . Ranger programs are conducted for visitors. Whether you spend an hour or a whole day, the trip is always worthwhile
